Goal Setting

Hello all! My name is Kymm and I teach Visual Arts to Kindergarten through Grade 8 in Central New Jersey.  I have a husband, an orange cat with a lot of personality, and baby #1 on the way! While art is an important part of my life, I also have strong interests in sports, music, and any kind of adventure. 2015 is definitely going to be the year of change and new challenges!

Let's talk about goal setting!
I am huge list maker, I always have been. While my organization has been on the, we'll call it "artsy side" I always have had an agenda book or some calendar or note app to write down my "to dos".  Mind you, they are colorful, made with Gelly Roll pens, and include scrapbooking materials or magazine scraps even if it is not relevant to my day. (Or is it?) Tasks around the house and in the classroom seem more manageable when I write them down and are able to cross them off (ahhhhhh).

Even though I was always a small time list maker, I never thought past my daily or weekly to do list with the exception of birthdays, doctors appointments and other obligations. Years back while finishing up my Masters and trying to land an art position, I applied to an up and coming athletic retail store for some income. The vibes of this job were great and it was related to something I was interested in.  During this group interview, we sat in a circle and the interviewer talked about goals.  Completing a goal sheet was actually part of my interview. Before that interview, I had never written my goals down in this way. They had you think about your 10 year, 5 year and 1 year goal in three areas: Career, Health and Personal. Thinking that far ahead was tough but eye opening. Where did I want to be in 10 years? 5 years? 1 year? After I filled these out, they asked what I was doing now to work towards these goals. My answers shocked me and I wish I still had them to reflect on. Thinking about what you were doing or what you were not doing was helping to explain why certain goals were taking longer to achieve. Even though I didn't get the job, I continued to use the goal sheet. If you feel like checking this out and filling this out I highly suggest it > Goal Setting Maybe you will surprise yourself.

So this year, one of my goals is creating a blog of student work from my school and posting links to my inspiration for teaching (like other blogs and resources). I intend on posting once a week until I go on maternity leave and continue when I return to school in June.

I am ready to attack my 1 year career goal! What are your goals for the new year?
